Description – This will be a SPECIAL COOL SCIENCE FESTIVAL SPORT LAUNCH.  We will be flying all types of model rockets, (including some rather unusual ones) all day.  Ever see a fire hydrant fly?  How about an Egyptian pyramid?  Bring your own model rockets to launch.  We’ll also have free motors available to those that need them. Come on out, leave the rest to us and have lots of fun.

10:00am – 10:30am — Garden of the Gods Nature Walk

Location – Main Parking Lot, Perkins Central Garden Trail Head, Garden of the Gods Park (map here)

Description – Enjoy a 30-minute walk led by Garden of the Gods naturalist Bret Tennis presenting fascinating facts and lore regarding wildflowers, rattlesnakes, gold-seekers and many other Colorado-themed topics relevant to the Garden.

10:00am – 12:00pm — Cool Rocks of Colorado Springs Geology Hike

Location -  Starsmore Discovery Center, 2120 South Cheyenne Canon Rd. (map here)

Description - Discover the amazing geology of the Pikes Peak Region.  Walk to the Ute line and witness where the Rockies rose above the plains. Complete a Pikes Peak Granite mineral card to take home.

10:00am – 1:00pm — Geocaching/Science Outdoor Treasure Hunt

Location -  The Western Museum of Mining and Industry (map here)

Description – Geocaching and science puzzles collide in this fun, active outdoor treasure hunt at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry’s Science Family Day.  Want to find the hidden treasures in the woods surrounding the museum?  Well first you’ll need to test your knowledge of basic science. Each puzzle will give you the coordinates of a geocache. No geocaching experience necessary. We will have GPS units and experienced geocachers to help.

10:00am – 1:00pm  –  Venetucci Farm:  Good Soil – Healthy Food – Fit Body

Location -  Venetucci Farm, 5210 South US Hwy 85, (map here)

Description -  Learn about what good soil does to your food, what healthy food does to your body, and what a fit body does to you! We will teach kids and families, through active participation, about building compost, harvesting, cooking a stone soup, and burning energy for sports performance and health promotion. To conclude the event we’ll celebrate the harvest, the stone soup with all of its ingredients and people contributing.

10:00am – 2:00pm  –  Cool Science Festival Rubik’s Cube Competition

Location -  The City Auditorium, 221 E. Kiowa St. (map here)

Description – The culminating event of the Festival, at the city Auditorium on East Kiowa Street, teams of up to eight students will race to see which teams can solve 25 Rubik’s Cubes in the least amount of time.  The contest will be divided into elementary, middle, and high school divisions with cash prizes and trophies going to the winning teams for their school.  Come watch the fun and help us bring this year’s Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival to a fitting close.

Description – The Western Museum of Mining Industry is hosting a Science Family Day at the museum. Besides museum activities, Science from CU-Boulder will present and have hands-on demonstrations on Magnets & Electricity; the Wings Over the Rockies Museum will have flight simulator stations and a Goddard rocket station; and local science educators from Cool Science will have hands-on scientific activities and demonstrations.

11:00am – 12:00pm — Face-to-Face With Live BATS!

Location -  The Wildlife Experience, 10035 Peoria St., Parker CO (map here)

Description – Discover the wonder of the world’s only flying mammal. The Organization for Bat Conservation will have several live bat species including the Flying Fox with a wingspan of over 3!

Location – Buell Children’s Museum, Pueblo CO (map here)

Description – Expect the unexpected as science and art swim into a unique experience under the sea. Take a peek at the ocean and an amazing creature. Discover fascinating factoids and let your imagination dive into color, water, and creativity. Wearable walking art works will be beachy keen as you enjoy the Buell Children’s Museum Exhibit, “Smilin’ Islands – A Tropical Caribbean Adventure” at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in Pueblo, Colorado.

Description – Stick Horses in Pants, a short-form improvisational comedy troupe that draws its humor from everyday situations, is putting together an evening of laughter specifically to close out this year’s Cool Science Festival.  Join this group of talented comics for a night of laughs at the Broadmoor  Theater as they take aim at the quirky and wacky world of science.

1:00pm – 4:00pm  –  KRCC Open House: Cool Science & Sun Viewing

Description – Come tour public radio station KRCC (owned by Colorado College) facility.  In conjunction with our annual membership drive, we’ll also have a gathering of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society with their solar scopes and equipment and Cool Science will bring hands on science activities.
